because the DoD loops are the first thing I put in there. I don't think saving my entire project as 16 bit is the way to go.

True.? I'm at work now so my manuals elude me. but it sounds like the loop explorer in Sonar 4 is a 16bit-only feature. I've never used the loop explorer - DoD is about as 'loopy' as my mixing gets. That way, you wouldn't need to use Media Player at all, and you'd probably save some time, too. Then, after deciding on loops, convert and import them into your original 24 bit project. One thing you can do is make a stereo 16 bit file of your project, and import it into a 16 bit project for previewing DoD in Sonar's loop explorer. I usually deal with midi through external midi gear, and preview loops in 16 bit, and import them into a 24 bit project I don't use Media player for creating music, only cd listening.įor loop preview purposes I use the loop explorer tool in Sonar. Is nobody using Windows Media Player with 24 bit.?

Obviously you can do it with other programs, but if someone hands me a 24bit master on a CD etc, my first reaction would be to play it (via Media Player.) even though it is probably destined fro T Racks etc. I have to ask though - are people not listening to their 24bit wav's before dithering to 16bit.? I can't remember any options in the M-Audio set-up to configure how windows will plays audio files, I'll have a look though. I've downloaded a media player codec suite from the MSoft website - hoping that will sort it. So, now it's getting interesting - maybe a soundcard issue.?! I thinks it's a problem of settings but, for the moment, I don't find for me. With my soundcard, an Aardvark DPro 24/96, I can't read 24 bits files (but I can in Sonar) and I tried last sunday on the DAW of a friend which has a EMU 1212 M and it works, I can read a 24 bits file with WMP (same version that mine). (Which, unfortunately, I still need.) Happily, VLC does NOT force you to remove old QT players. It doesn't come from WMP.

So I was DELIGHTED to find that VLC media player plays mp4 and other "QT" media really well and has far more playback controls than the crappy QT Pro.

And you can't install the free/nagware limited QT player WITHOUT uninstalling QT Pro.

THEN I realized there was a NEW version of QT out (7) and you need IT to play Mp4s.īut to upgrade from 6.5 to 7 would cost me FULL PRICE (!!!). since Apple was hyping it (v 6.5) as the 'pathway' to Mp4.īut I kept hitting the Update utility and would go check and come back and tell me I was up to date and had all the codecs. I was AMAZED to find I couldn't play "Mp4" files in the version of QT Pro I paid $30 bucks for a year or a little more ago - esp. I'd heard good things about Quicktime Alternative - but IT requires you to uninstall Apple Quicktime and I - extremely unfortunately - need Quicktime Pro to deal with the output of my cam. rm files ? (without installing realplayer or quicktime)For Real media files I use RealAlternative which seems to by and large work great, seems to have a small, unleaky footprint - and DOES NOT SPY ON YOU (unlike some Real media players from.
